When Donald Trump announced he would hold a wake for slain New York City police officer Jonathan Diller, the conservative New York Post approvingly wrote that the former president was “expected to cite the young police shooting death as another example of runaway crime.” And so he did. at the ceremony for the dealer, who was killed in a traffic stop Monday. Trump was not interested in trying to unite the country to understand the tragedy. In other words, he was himself.

“It’s happening too often and we’re just not going to let it happen,” he told press outside the funeral home. “We have to restore law and order,” he said. “All we can say is, maybe something is being learned. We’ve got to toughen it up, we’ve got to toughen it up. It should never be allowed to happen.

Distortion of the truth is only part of Trump’s problem.

Trump’s image of a national hell where law and order has disappeared is false. Crime has dropped dramatically over the past year, including in cities that Trump has characterized as hotbeds of mayhem and murder. For example, Boston – a city of 650,000 people – has had only two homicides so far in 2024. Perhaps Massachusetts liberals have something to teach the rest of the country about crime prevention?
